About Muslin:

Accurately, muslin is one weaving type, not one “ancient” & “magical” material. Any loose weaving fabric can be called muslin. But it can be classified with different ways.

l  Depend on layers of weaving: It can be single ply, 2-ply, 3-ply, 6-ply, etc. The most popular is 2-ply. It’s most breathable while keep some strength.

l  Depend on materials it uses: It can be 100% cotton , bamboo rayon /cotton mixture/, 100% organic cotton, wool , hemp /bamboo rayon/cotton, etc.---It’s NOT correct to call it “ancient cotton” because cotton is only one of materials muslin uses generally. In fact bamboo rayon/cotton muslin is much softer than cotton muslin.

l  Muslin is most suitable for sewing blanket and swaddle. It’s ok to make bibs as well. But NOT suitable to make clothes because seam slippage is very weak due to its inborne loose construction. As for babies’ clothes, recommend to use knitting rib. It’s soft and stretchy and more breathable than jersey.

l  Are all muslin swaddles softer with more washes? Not at all. Till today, we found only 2 muslin swaddles can be softer with more washes. 1. Bamboo rayon/cotton mixture muslin swaddle. 2. 100% cotton muslin swaddle but with special thread size and density.
